Just as VIX futures had its record, it only seems fair that VIX options had their own as well.

On Tuesday,?Chicago Board Options Exchange? (CBOE?) reported that options on the CBOE Volatility Index? (VIX? index) hit an all-time, single-day volume record with an estimated 1,388,937 contracts.

This surpassed the previous record of 1,219,226 contracts traded on September 11, 2012.

Also on Tuesday, CBOE Futures Exchange’s (CFE?) VIX futures grabbed their second-best day ever with 299,566 contracts traded; this came one day after it had hit a new record high of 302,278 contracts traded.?

This numbers follow CBOE and CFE announcements that for the month of January, VIX options and futures both saw record-breaking monthly trading volumes:

  • VIX options had its best month ever with its average daily volume (ADV) of 680,822 contracts; this exceeded the previous record ADV of 582,022 contracts in August 2011. Total volume for the month was 14.3 million contracts–a new record.?
  • VIX futures underwent its best month ever with daily ADV of 137,988 contracts, exceeding the previous record of 130,202 contracts in November 2012. Total volume for the month was a record 2.9 million contracts.

On Wednesday, the VIX closed at 14.74, down 12.63%.
