On Monday, the CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) announced its?CBOE Volatility Index? (VIX? index) futures?set an all-time single-day volume record of 302,278 contracts?(estimated).?

The record surpasses the previous VIX futures single-day record?of 221,323 contracts traded on January 2, 2013.?

Earlier in the month, CFE reported that January 2013 VIX futures average daily volume?(ADV) was 137,988 contracts, a record month in?CFE’s history. January’s ADV jumped 241 percent and 13 percent,?respectively, from January 2012’s ADV of 40,439 futures contracts and December 2012’s ADV of 121,782 contracts.?

Also on Monday, the VIX jumped 35% to 19.18 after the U.S. stock market sold off along with increasing concerns for European stability.?

This represented its largest one-day percentage jump since August 2011.

For the day, the fear index closed at 18.99, up 34.02%.

On Tuesday with the market nearing its close, the VIX is at 17.14, down 9.74%.
