On Tuesday, the?Chicago Board Options Exchange? (CBOE?) announced that options on the CBOE Volatility Index? (VIX? index) hit an all-time, single-day volume record with an estimated 1,392,621 contracts. This record surpasses the previous one set on February 26, 2013 when 1388,634 contracts traded.?
CBOE Futures Exchange?s (CFE?) VIX futures also hit a record day on Tuesday as it saw its third-best volume day ever with an estimated 298,781 contracts. This fell short of the record 302,278 contracts traded on February 25 and the 299,566 contracts traded on February 26.?
For?VIX options and futures, they have also had record-breaking monthly trading volumes in 2013. This includes?VIX options recording their best month ever in January with an average daily volume (ADV) of 680,822 contracts, exceeding the 582,022 ADV contract record set in August 2011.
Then in February,?VIX futures reached an all-time monthly high with ADV of 161,176 contracts, exceeding the previous ADV monthly record set in January 2013 with 137,988 contracts.?
On Tuesday, the VIX closed up 7.71% to 14.39.
