CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE?) reported that October 2014 was the busiest month all-time for trading of futures on the CBOE Volatility Index? (VIX? Index). New records were set in monthly average daily volume (ADV) and monthly total volume, as well as for single-day and week-long trading activity.
October was the third month in 2014 in which monthly average daily volume in VIX futures reached a new all-time high. The record 323,761 contracts per day in October surpassed the previous high of 216,996 contracts in August 2014. October’s ADV rose 78 percent from October 2013 and 81 percent from September 2014.
Trading in VIX futures set new single-day volume records on consecutive days during the month as 791,788 contracts traded on October 15 and 616,906 contracts traded on October 14. The previous record was 528,628 contracts on August 1, 2014.
Trading activity in VIX futures also set new week-long volume records in consecutive weeks during the month as 2.8 million contracts traded during the week of October 13 through 17 and 1.7 million contracts traded during the week of October 6 through 10. The previous record was 1.5 million contracts traded during the week of August 4 through 8, 2014.
Total volume in VIX futures for October was a record 7.4 million contracts, up 78 percent from October 2013 and up 99 percent from September 2014. October’s record total volume topped the previous high of 4.6 million contracts in August 2014.
Through the end of October, year-to-date total volume in VIX futures stood at 42.9 million contracts, which already surpassed the 39.9 million contracts traded for all of 2013.

October exchange-wide ADV was a record 324,291 contracts, a 77-percent increase from a year ago and an 81-percent increase from September 2014. Exchange-wide total volume during the month was a new high of 7.5 million contracts, a 77-percent increase from October 2013 and a 98-percent increase from September 2014. The previous records were 217,440 contracts per day and 4.6 million total contracts, both set in August 2014.
